Auschwitz-Birkenau
The Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum is a complex of authentic Nazi concentration camps, with preserved fences, prisoner barracks, crematoria, roads, ruins of gas chambers, documents and items that belonged to prisoners and SS-men. The museum offers permanent and temporary exhibitions. Permanent exhibitions include the main exhibition and national exhibitions.
The main exhibition shows what Nazi death camps looked like, presenting original or reconstructed barracks for prisoners, their clothes and other items.
National exhibitions have been prepared by representatives of individual nations whose citizens were killed in the concentration camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau. In the Museum you can visit national exhibitions of: Czechoslovakia, Hungary, the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Belgium, Denmark, Bulgaria, Austria, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland, the German Democratic Republic and the exhibition Martyrdom, the fight and the extermination of Jews.
In 1947, at the request of former prisoners of the camp, it was transformed into the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum, as a Monument to the Martyrdom of the Polish Nation and other nations, which should be preserved.
Since 1979, it has been inscribed on the UNESCO list as Auschwitz-Birkenau. German Nazi concentration and extermination camp (1940-1945).
