Wieliczka Salt Mine and Schindler’s Factory
In this place in 1937, the factory called Emalia was established, in which enamel and tin products were produced. Two years later, Oskar Schindler took over the factory and ran it until 1945. At that time, he employed Jews threatened with extermination. When in 1944 the Germans liquidated prisons and camps, Oskar Schindler evacuated the factory, thus saving around 1,100 workers from extermination. Currently, the building houses a branch of the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków documenting the period of the Nazi occupation of Kraków in 1939-1945 and the Museum of Contemporary Art. The exhibition is divided into several sections. Each of them is devoted to a different issue: the war of 1939, the role of Kraków as the seat of the occupation authorities of the General Government, everyday life, the fate of Kraków Jews, the resistance and history of the factory itself, its employees and owner, Oskar Schindler.
The museum has extensive written and photographic documentation that comes from many sources, both Polish and foreign. Another important element of the exhibition are documentary films and radio records, in which residents of Kraków talk about their experiences from the period of 1939-1945. Thanks to Rainbow Transfer you can visit the Schindler Factory during a trip to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum.
